SFD Blazing a Trail for Literacy Reading Program
Friday, January 19, 2018

The Salisbury Fire Department (SFD), Wicomico County Board of Education, St Francis de Sales, Salisbury Christian School, and Wicomico Day School have partnered to encourage students to read for twenty minutes a day in hope of encouraging young readers to be successful readers to achieve their life goals. Reading is essential for the fundamental development of young children. Through the “Blazing a Trail for Literacy” program, the SFD is proposing a Reading Challenge for 2nd grade students. Students are encouraged to read twenty minutes a day every day. During the program, the SFD will read three predetermined and age appropriate books to each class in the target schools. One book will be read during the program kickoff, a second book at half time or the half way mark, and the third book will be read during the recognition portion of the program. Teachers and staff at each participating Elementary Schools will monitor the progress of the students and their reading progress throughout the timeframe.
